You have to develop your relationships with the key booker on the board as well as with your own booker if they happen to be two different people at your modeling agency. The bookers, or model managers as they’re also called today, are your main connection to jobs. Your agency represents you and pushes for you to get work. However, they also have the clients’ interests in mind since they take commissions from both you and the client. Your booker will also most likely be representing a handful of other models, so you want to stand out in his/her mind as a model who is professional and easy to deal with and not an egomaniacal vampire. Go out for coffee or lunch with her when you can, and certainly be in touch with your booker on a daily basis. Get to know her without becoming a friend, per se. Friendship might naturally develop and very often does, which is fine, but remember, a booker is a business associate who is working for you and the agency that employs them. When they get you work, the agency makes money. You want to be gracious in your relationship with your booker. For instance, if he or she has made you a lot of money in the previous year, it’s advisable to get them a gift for Christmas. And remember you might not particularly like all of your bookers around the globe, but they represent you and part of being in any business is learning how to get along as best you can with everyone you work with, especially the people who are representing you to clients and who are on the phone pitching you for the jobs. You want to make your booker think of you first when they are suggesting models to clients for jobs. If you find yourself working with one who is not treating you with respect and you feel this can have a detrimental effect on your career, then by all means handle the situation. As tactfully as you can, but handle it. This might even include speaking to the director or head of the agency about being switched to another booker if you can’t handle the situation on your own.

I’ll never forget when I stepped into Industria Studio in NY for the Anne Klein A Line advertising campaign shoot with the world renowned photographer Steven Klein, and saw an elephant on set. OMG!? I thought to myself. Will I have to ride that beast?! My heart started beating faster and I started to sweat. I’m not that great with big animals that can crush me if they choose to. Little furry friends like dogs and cats are fine, but elephants and horses make me jittery. There was an elephant trainer present who was in charge of keeping the elephant subdued and focused but she was so much smaller than the animal that I had visions of her being run over as it headed for me.
